Glitzy, glamorous, and golden—the 50th Grand Coronation Night of the 2013 Binibining Pilipinas pageant on April 14 at the Araneta Coliseum was a milestone event for the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, Incorporated (BPCI), as it celebrated the pageant's golden anniversary.

The new beauty queens hailed that night were: Candidate No. 41 Ariella Arida (Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Miss Universe), Candidate No. 39 Mutya Datul (Binibining Pilipinas 2013 Miss Supranational), Candidate No. 16 Joanna Miranda (Binibining Pilipinas 2013 Tourism), Candidate No. 20 Bea Santiago (Binibining Pilipinas 2013 International), and Candidate No. 15 Pia Wurtzbach (Binibining Pilipinas 2013 First Runner-Up). After two months of non-stop activities--the candidates showed off their talentswalked the runway in their swimsuits, national costumes, and JAG-sponsored ensembles; and paraded around Araneta--these ladies stood out and made it to the winners’ circle.

The new queen

Laguna beauty Ariella Arida was in total shock as she came forward to wear the coveted Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Miss Universe crown.

The 24-year-old was not only stunning during the swimsuit and evening gown competitions, she charmed the crowd with her answer when judge Philippine National Police Director General Alan Purisima told her to “name a lesson about life that women can teach men.” Ariella replied, “One lesson in life that women can teach men is [to be] sensitive, because we all know that men are more logical when it comes to decision[-making]. They’re usually more rational, straightforward. Unlike women, we use our hearts and tend to get emotional in some of our decisions. So, that’s it for me. Sensitivity is something that we, women, can teach men. Thank you.”

The new beauty queen, who was also named Best in Swimsuit, will now begin training for the next international Miss Universe pageant.

Grand opening

The show began with a video featuring all the past Binibining Pilipinas beauty queens and titleholders from international pageants such as Miss Universe where many of them competed to win the crown. Then host Martin Nievera welcomed onstage more than 70 past Binibini beauty queens, including international Miss Universe queens Gloria Diaz (1969) and Margie Moran (1973), and former Miss International winners Precious Lara Quigaman (2005), Aurora Pijuan (1970), and Melanie Marquez (1979).

Gorgeous ladies also joined Martin to carry on the show in full swing. Dawn Zulueta accompanied the singer onstage, while Miss Universe 2010 Fourth Runner-Up Venus Raj and Miss Universe 2011 Third Runner-Up Shamcey Supsup co-hosted the show from a balcony with a sweeping view of the stage.

Special awards

During the early part of the program, Martin and Dawn announced the winners of Binibining Pilipinas special honors. Miss Friendship was Candidate No. 21 Lourenz Grace Remetillo. Miss Photogenic and Best in Evening Gown was Candidate No. 39 Mutya. Best in Talent was Candidate No. 10 Anna Aquino. The Best in National Costume honor went to Candidate No. 37 Ma. Teresita Baccay. The Creamsilk Beyond Beauty award was bestowed on Candidate No. 16 Joanna, while the Avon Award was given to Candidate No. 20 Bea.

The Q&A portion

For the all-important Question and Answer portion, the judges, such as football star, AKTV sports ambassador, and Kristn.com columnist James Younghusband; celeb host Boy Abunda; business man Gabby Lopez; Miss Universe 1969 Gloria; and Ambassador of Italy Massimo Roscigno, to name a few, asked the Top 15 relevant questions on topics ranging from current events to entertainment. Judge Bobby Huang asked Candidate No. 45, “The Beatles believed that all you need is love. Agree or disagree, and why?” James asked Candidate No. 22, “If you have the opportunity to speak to the new Pope, what would you tell him?” Gloria asked Candidate No. 46, “Do you think you could be a good Catholic if you believe in the RH bill?” Despite the tense moment, host Martin kept the mood light and joked around saying, “RH…as in Really Hard!”
